the earth is on fire

Driving home from meeting I had in Ladysmith today I started talking to my supervisor about the increasing number of fields around my village that are totally burnt to a crisp. my supervisor really couldn't give me a reason for why people just set plots of land on fire, but it seems to happen a lot this time of year. yesterday my host told me that last year some random people had lit their front yard on fire and it came close to burning down buildings at my organization/my house. aaaanyways. last night i went to the burn pile outside (everyone here burns their garbage) to throw something out and saw that the hills were on fire. well, not the entire hills, just large portions of them. also about half of a km away the fields surrounding our house were on fire.

however. tonight fire has been set directly next to our house. right next door. i discovered this when i started smelling really heavy smoke while i was sitting on my bed. i go outside to see that my house is almost going to be engulfed by flames. well, not really, but it is definitely the closest i have ever been to a intense fire. the weird thing is last year during the "burning season" an entire group of houses were wiped out not too far from here, killing a number of people. i guess people never learn.

I knew it, you've been in California all along.

That's a neat trick about deferring your loans and tricking the government and all. You'll have to show me that one once Arnold Schwarzenegger lifts the state of emergency.
